My artwork is generally characterized by imagery inspired by the natural world, vibrant color, and meticulous attention to surface and detail of form. My latest works are a series called "Cloud Anatomy," which includes both archival inkjet prints of clouds and painted reliefs. I have completed two public art mural commissions (images below) Some of my earlier work in paintings, drawings and prints can also be found here. I welcome your inquiries at helen@helenglazer.com.

Works in Progress: My interest in the insights of chaos and complexity theories and how they can be seen operating in the natural world has influenced my work for a few years. Since February, I have been engaging with these concepts more directly in a new series (above left and left). These works are derived from photographs I took of clouds, then worked on in Photoshop to isolate and bring out the intricacies of the form. Working with Direct Dimensions, a firm that does digital 3D imaging, I translated these ephemeral forms into a tangible three-dimensional relief sculpture. The images you see here are also being printed as high-quality inkjet prints, incorporating color. See description and detail image of the sculpture and the cloud photograph series.

News & Exhibitions

Steven Scott Gallery: Currently on view through September at the Steven Scott Gallery in Owings Mills, Maryland, are three reliefs: Nesting Season, Aurora and Breakthrough. A group show at the gallery, opening October 1, and running through the end of 2008 will include Rise.

Pyramid Atlantic: This renowned center for creating and exhibiting works on paper in Silver Spring, Maryland, will be hosting a four-person show Dec. 2 - Jan. 24, including my cloud photographs, tentatively titled The Sky is Not the Limit and curated by Felix Angel, curator at the Inter-American Development Bank Cultural Center.

Penned: My drawing Penn's Cave is in the traveling exhibition Penned which debuted at Artscape 2008, July 17-20 in Baltimore. The theme of the show is drawings made with commercially available pens; artists were asked to provide a photo of the ones they used and the brand names, an unusual request for an exhibition. The title of the drawing conveniently fits the theme, but it really does depict formations I photographed in Penn's Cave in Central Pennsylvania, an attraction billed as "America's only all-water cavern" -- you tour it by boat. After Artscape the show travels to the Ellipse Arts Center in Arlington, VA and Lump Projects Gallery in Raleigh, NC, details to be announced.

Bloomingdale's exhibit

Artist's Profile: In March 2004, writer Geoffrey Himes, whose credits include the Washington Post and reviews for NPR, wrote a profile of me, which goes into my artistic development over the years, working process and conceptual framework. Read it here.
